Fight cancer with race on Saturday

Man accused of setting fire to home
A New Castle area man is accused of setting his own house on fire in order to collect insurance money. Reports say he received amounts of $160,000 in insurance money. Timothy McConahy, 59, of New Castle, has been charged with setting fire to his home located along Fairground Road in June 2009. Girls tennis and volleyball teams defeated
The Ellwood City girls tennis team fell to Central Valley, 4-1, as the Wolverine’s Reed Kegel continued her strong play. Kegel defeated her single’s opponent 6-1, 6-2. The doubles teams took their opponents to three sets, yet did not get victories. Ellwood City was also defeated in volleyball as the girls fell to Blackhawk 3-0 (25-14, 20-25, 12-25). Police searching for hit-and-run driver
Police in Lawrence County are looking for the driver who hit a boy walking home from school on Wednesday. Authorities said Sam Toman, 14, spent several hours in the emergency room and sustained injuries to his face, hip and chest. Sam was able to walk to a friend’s house and his mother drove him to Ellwood City Hospital, police said. The accident happened on Third Street in Ellwood City, officials said. A picture is worth a thousand words
A thunderstorm that passed through western Pa. on Monday night dumped more than two inches of rain on Lawrence, Beaver, and Butler counties within a two-hour time span. Roads and bridges were closed, basements were flooded, and trees and wires were knocked down. With help from local residents, photos of the storm’s aftermath around the Ellwood City area were captured.
Couple charged with theft of copper wire
A recently married couple from Eastvale has been charged with the theft of copper wire from 18 utility poles around the Ellwood City area that dates back to August 9, according to North Sewickley Township police. April Cater, 24, and Joseph Russell, 23, face a preliminary hearing next month on charges of theft, criminal conspiracy, and criminal mischief.
