Ellwood City celebrates annual Homecoming
On Friday, the Ellwood City Wolverines hope to celebrate their fourth win of the season as they take on Mohawk at Helling Stadium at 7:30 p.m. during Ellwood’s 55th annual Homecoming game and festivities. Buben & Vetica advance to WPIAL finals, 1st time in 16 years
Zach Buben and Jared Vetica both advanced to the WPIAL Championship after Zach finished 5th out of 51 Division II golfers with a great round of 76, and Jared Vetica earned the 12th and final spot with a playoff victory over 3 others golfers. Heavy rain floods area, closes bridge
A heavy storm rumbled through the Ellwood City area Monday evening dumping 1 to 2 1/2 inches of rain in some areas resulting in flooded basements, fallen trees, power outages, and forced the Koppel-North Sewickley Bridge to close. Borough manager Dom Viccari confirmed the Ewing Park area was left without power amongst the fallen trees scattered throughout the area. Ellwood police will be sporting new vests
Ellwood City borough police officers will now wear bulletproof vests under their uniforms whenever they are on duty. Council approved the purchase of 11 bulletproof vests from North Eastern Uniform at a total cost of $7,843 ($713 per vest) and also approved the “bulletproof vest wearing policy.” Police Chief Mark Romutis said that the officers will be required to wear the vests whenever they are on duty, apart from specific circumstances when vests cannot be … Continue reading
Turnovers hurt Ellwood in loss to Beaver
Although the four turnovers Ellwood City had in matchup against Beaver on Saturday may not have been the reason for the loss, it sure didn’t help. The Wolverines threw one interception that was returned for a touchdown and had three other fumbles en route to a 24-7 loss. Local teen dies in car crash
An Ellwood City teenager suffered fatal injuries after a severe automobile accident Saturday morning in Wayne Township. Police said that Zachary Samlut, 19, of Hillside Ave., Ellwood City, was alone in his car when they found him Saturday morning just after 8:30 a.m. Police have not said what caused the crash. Riverside could not bounce back to .500 Friday night as the Panthers fell to the Laurel Spartans 19-8 in section play. The Spartans were coming off three straight losses to Aliquippa, Jeanette, and Beaver Falls in what is the toughest start to a season any team has had to face. The victory was Laurel’s first of the season while Riverside fell to 1-3.
Seven arrested overnight on drug charges
The Lawrence County Special Investigations Unit (SIU) apprehended seven individuals Thursday night and Friday morning on drug-related charges, said Ellwood City police chief Mark Romutis. All of the individuals were picked up in and around Ellwood City, and each of them will be facing charges of either possession of narcotics and/or possession of narcotics with the intent to deliver.
