Vetica, Deep lead Panther squads to victory
Dom Vetica continued his hot streak from beyond the arc while Alex Deep had an all around game for their respective Panther squads in victories Thursday night. Vetica connected on four more 3-pointers en route to leading the Panthers to a 75-46 victory over Langley that wrapped up Riverside’s Shady Side Tournament. After a first quarter that saw Ellwood City jump out to a 12-2 lead, Riverside stormed back with its own 15-0 spurt and later implemented a full court press that aided a 13-2 second quarter run leading towards its 56-43 victory in the opening night of the LGKG Holiday Classic. Borough residents: No tax increase
In what appears to be a turnaround from two weeks ago, borough council voted 3-2 to keep the property tax rate at 5.24 mills for 2012. Approving the final budget was deterred by the absence of two council members who supported the preliminary budget earlier this month. Two weeks ago, council approved the preliminary budget, in a 4-3 vote, for a quarter-mill property tax increase. Batteries Burn At Ellwood City Industrial Plant
Firefighters spent early Thursday morning battling a fire at a metal recycling plant in Ellwood City. The blaze broke out at about 3:30 a.m. at the INMETCO plant along Jamison Avenue. Seven fire departments with 20 fire trucks surrounded the large, smoking buildings. At about 6:30 a.m., firefighters took to using foam to fight the flames, which had been contained to the roof. Holiday vandalism in North Sewickley Twp.
Friends and families are coming together to help a North Sewickley Township family rebuild their Christmas light display after vandals destroyed an estimated thousand dollars worth of the display last week. Emmett Santillo, Sr. estimates the vandals attacked his Christmas displays sometime between 1:00am and 5:00am Friday morning. 2 local athletes named to prestigious teams
Two area athletes were recognized and added to prestigious rosters, one on the turf in Western Pennsylvania, the other on the ice for Team USA. Ellwood City Kyle Crawford was recognized by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and selected to the West Xtra Fabulous 22 football team for 2011.
