Moraine State Park, more specifically Lake Arthur, played host of yet another “Douse for the House” Polar Plunge on Saturday. Hundreds of people gathered on the South Shore of the freezing lake to witness approximately 90 brave men and women rush into the frigid water.
While the air temperature was warmer than last year, the 40 degree temperature was just as chilling as ever. There was some ice on top of the water, but for the most part the water was ice-free.

Photo submitted by Ellwood City resident Sarah Beatrice, who participated in the plunge (wearing the all black suit) accompanied by Ellport resident Stanley Piecuch (wearing brown wig). Many of the participants wore some type of costume.
This was the second consecutive year of the charity event, and organizers hope to continue this young tradition at Moraine State Park.
Those taking the plunge into the lake gathered at least $100 in sponsorship. The money goes to Lawrence County’s chapter of the Habitat for Humanity International, a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing organization.
Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with people in need to build and renovate decent, affordable housing. The houses then are sold to those in need at no profit and with no interest charged.
