Heat index soars to 100 degrees for Festival, day 1

Thursday reached a high of 95 degrees in Ellwood City, according to officials, and it’s just going to get hotter on Friday.

According to the National Weather Service, humidity will increase throughout the day Friday and temperatures will again reach 95, but the heat index will approach 100 degrees by late afternoon.

The heat index (HI) is a meter that combines air temperature and relative humidity in an attempt to determine the human-perceived equivalent temperature, or in other words, how hot it feels outside.

The hot weather will not let up for the weekend either.  The weather service is predicting a high temperature of 90 degrees for Saturday and Sunday.

This area averages seven days per year with weather of 90 degrees or higher, according to WPXI meteorologist Scott Harbaugh.  Friday’s high of 95 degrees will make seven.

Officials are warning everyone to take precautions in these high temperatures.  Drink plenty of water and stay in the shade whenever possible.
