Annual Wampum celebration to begin Friday

Tons of events are planned for the annual Wampum Area Homecoming Celebration this weekend, with the festivities beginning on Friday with a car cruise.

Starting at 6 p.m., the 20th annual Main Street Car Cruise takes place down the main street of Wampum, which will feature antique, sport, and classic cars. A trophy for “best of show” will be awarded and decorative cruise plates will be given to the first 100 registered. Registration starts at 4:30 p.m.

Additional activies are planned for the Friday car cruise, including Face Painting by Nancy; Steve Haberman, the Balloon Man; and a drawing for two bicycles donated by Wampum Mayor Jeff Steffler.

Saturday begins early with a breakfast buffet at Jata’s Restaurant at 323 Main Street from 8 a.m. to Noon. For $7.25, the buffet consists of scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, sausage gravy and biscuits, home fries, pancakes, and coffee.

At 7 p.m., the Wampum Homecoming Grand Buffet Dinner begins, with a social hour and registration beginning at 6 p.m. Guest of honor is the Class of 1962, with special guests to be classes of ’57, ’52, ’47, ’42, and ’37.  Dinner is open to the public; cost is $25.

On Sunday, the fun continues. At 5 p.m., the second annual Ducky River Race will commence. Only 700 ducks will be sold; first place wins $500, second place $250, and third place $100. Cost is just $5 per duck.

Then at 7 p.m., the Allegheny Drifters, a local bluegrass group, will perform on the lawn of Olde Main. The Drifters are sponsored by Wampum Area Homecoming, Marshall Funeral Home, and Universal Refractories.
