School looking into field improvements

The Ellwood City School District is looking into work on the high school baseball field, but it could cost the district nearly $25,000, according to school officials.

Officials with the school said that the infield surface as well as other field work is needed.

Sanders Field in Ewing Park is home to the 2012 Class AA WPIAL champion baseball team, but it also hosts both Ellwood City’s Pony League and Legion squads, so the field has had its fair share of use.

Other estimates have been made for Sanders Field, including an estimated cost for artificial turf at approximately $95,000.

Both options will be explored and a decision could be made at a later date.

School Start
The Ellwood City School District will start its school year a week before its neighboring school, Riverside.

Ellwood City schools will begin on Thursday, Aug. 23 while Riverside will not start until Tuesday, Aug. 28.  Both schools will have off on Monday, Sept. 3 for Labor Day.
