The Ellwood City Jr. High football team recently secured a huge victory against AAA Montour, 41-38.
The game was a seesaw affair with the outcome remaining undecided until the final seconds. Ellwood was down 24-13 at the half but got a huge spark as D.J. Barrett opened the 2nd half with a 75 yard touchdown on the kickoff.
Ellwood used the ground and pound approach along with some timely turnovers to outlast the Spartans.
Ellwood amassed 405 yards rushing behind a massive offensive line that includes, D’Shon Stevenson, Bo Timmerman, Shawn Brown, Adam Foreman, Luke Williamson, Vince DeCaria, Logan Gibbons, and James Taylor.
Strong, powerful running was displayed by the Ellwood backs with River Kelly leading the way with 154 yards on 13 carries, Nick Ioanilli added 106 yards on 15 carries and 3 touchdowns, D.J. Barrett had 86 yards on 5 carries, James Cunningham added 39 yards on 3 carries and a touchdown, and Chris Maielli added 16 yards on 5 carries.
Joe Bellissimo quarterbacked the offense and was 2 for 2 for 17 yards including a touchdown of 10 yards to Logan Gibbons.
The defense held tight when it needed to and forced 5 turnovers. Dominick Teolis had 2 interceptions; D.J. Barrett had an interception as did Carlo Agostinelli. Gibbons recovered a Montour fumble.
Ellwood’s head coach is Ron Grymes who is assisted by Robert Ewing, Tom Heckendorn, and Craig Alberts.
