Mary Black: Fact, Fiction, or both?

Halloween is a time of year when ghost stories, folklores, and other scary tales begin to surface.  In and around Lawrence County, one story seems to never lose its fascination. Lawrence County ghost stories and haunts

In every town, there are a number of ghost stories and legends that are designed to satisfy the Halloween appetite, and in Lawrence County, there are several that do just that. Deer-vehicle collisions are no laughing matter

You may remember comedian Ron White humorously state his view on deer hunting during the popular “Blue Collar Comedy Tour” when he famously says, “Yeah, well, I hit a deer with a van, goin’ fifty-five miles an hour, with the headlights on, and the horn blowin’!” Unfortunately, here in western Pa., hitting deer with a van, car, or truck is all too common, and it typically kills the deer, almost always damages your vehicle, and … Continue reading

Hereford Manor lakes may be rebuilt, someday

It’s hard to believe that just five months ago Hereford Manor was a set of fairly large fishing lakes along Route 288 (Zelienople Road) in Fombell. Now, they’re completely gone. In March, the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission began the draining of Hereford Manor because its dams were found to be substandard and unsafe. Water now flows from the Hereford Manor area to Doe Run Creek and the Connoquenessing Creek. At present, the only plan … Continue reading
